Lecture 1

Reflection

I enjoyed reading the “raw” text and it reminded me a lot of some devices and methods I often was fantasizing about with an old friend of mine. Mostly we were looking for tools to help reflecting on ourselfs and making sense of our minds. Apart from its research purpose I think the mentioned “raw system” could also be great tool for reflection and making memories. It seems like our smartphones and apps like Instagram are a mutaded monster of this proposed every life capturing device but I feel like they strongly miss the point of being an unmediated tool. With earphones being even more common nowadays the technical conditions for having such an apparatus available 24/7 are true for most people in the western world but I think the multifunctional nature of a smartphone actually rather prevents us from using it as a contemplative & reflective tool.

Lecture 2

Reflection

The “social network” text was very interesting to read and I think it aged well taking in consideration how outdated it is from a technial perspective. As I started to be online shortly after the myspace era I could relate very well to the points of the author. Being on MSN and on Netlog with a very early age I especially agree with the frequent notion of coolness as an important factor on understanding how social networks for teenagers work. Personally I think was quite aware of the public nature of being on these platforms and focussed a lot of putting myself in the right light. My online presence had a huge impact on my offline life and probably gave me for the first time in my life the sense of being in a bubble.
